SEO Tip of the Day: When Linking to Your Home/Logo
One of the most obvious hiccups that websites have is when they link to there “Home” or “Logo” on every page they will link to www.domainexample.com/index.php. Most will ask why does that matter? We’ll lets take a look at an example here…
If you notice the links set here on the “Home Page” button and the logo are set to go to: http://www.weatherconnect.com/default.asp. If you do a quick look at the Google Page Rank of these pages you will notice that:
http://www.weatherconnect.com
- Google Page Rank: 5
- seoMoz.org MozRank: 3.96
http://www.weatherconnect.com/default.asp
- Google Page Rank: 3
- seoMoz.org Moz Rank: 4.51
Now one might ask why does this matter? We’ll if you take a look… clearly Google is seeing these two url’s as two different pages and splitting the PageRank up which is a slight problem. If there are any links that go to /default.asp they are not being really counted as the homepage juice. Same is true if lets say their Weather Instruments page has 500 links and when that link juice comes in and gets funneled out to the internal pages it will be funneling that juice to /default.asp instead of to the homepage /.
So anytime you are setting up your Home and Logo links please remember to make them link to the / instead of to the index or default actual page name. You can rectify this so in the example of WeatherConnect.com they could simply either make the programming change or if they dont have the resources to pay for a programmer to make those changes they could easily insert the canonical tag which would let the search engines know /default.asp is really / and “301″ the link juice and value to that /. I will cover the newly supported canonical tag in an advanced tip later on.
