SEO Tip of the Day: Target Long Tail Keywords & Watch Bounce Rates

Have you ever wanted to target long tail keywords or perhaps you are already targeting long tail keywords and you are noticing a spike in your bounce rate? We’ll if you are using Google Anayltics which is a free and widely popular analytics solution then you easily have accessible your bounce rate stats which you can view by traffic source, search engine, keyword, and per page.

If you are tracking your long tail keyword rankings then I would strongly suggest that you keep an eye on your bounce rate as I have seen companies who want to rank for “free blue widgets” on the example page www.widgets.com/blue-widgets.html and when you visit the blue widgets page in this example it has 50 products listed and only 10 are free. We’ll when you have a searchers attention on your page and they had originally searched free blue widgets and you present with them just a page of blue widgets then you run the possibility of losing that searcher within the first few seconds as they scour looking for those free blue widgets.

My advice is to create specific landing pages in this example for those long tail keywords so you can provide relevant information for your visitors and what they are looking for, rich content for the search engines, and a strong call to action if that relates.

Next, you may ask what is bounce rate and why should I be focusing on it?

Bounce Rate – Defined by Google Analytics is “Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality – a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren’t relevant to your visitors. The more compelling your landing pages, the more visitors will stay on your site and convert. You can minimize bounce rates by tailoring landing pages to each keyword and ad that you run. Landing pages should provide the information and services that were promised in the ad copy.”

To view your bounce rate you can visit the report within Google Analytics at Visitors > Visitor Trending > Bounce Rate.

Make sure and keep an eye on bounce rates by search engine, keyword, and even by page.

In a further detailed advanced tip of the day I will cover more on bounce rates and how important they are to your website after you accomplish gaining rankings via SEO efforts.
